Freedom of Information requests of waiting times data in Wales made by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) have found that in March 2017 the number of patients waiting more than a year (52 weeks) for surgical treatment was 3,605 – a rise of over 400% in four years. In March 2013, 699 patients were waiting more than a year for treatment.

Leading dentists have warned there is an urgent need to improve oral healthcare for older people. The Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons estimates that across England, Wales and Northern Ireland at least 1.8 million people aged 65 and over have an urgent dental condition such as dental pain, oral sepsis (a dental infection that can lead to blood poisoning) or extensive decay in untreated teeth.

NHS services are well organised to deliver breast cancer care in line with national clinical guidelines. “Breast cancer survival rates are at their highest ever” said Professor Chris Harrison, National Clinical Director for Cancer at NHS England. However, services require improvements to meet the individual needs of older patients according to a new report.

A surgeon from Manchester has become the first to be endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons to perform cosmetic surgery. The cosmetic surgery certification, which was launched in January, aims to make the cosmetic surgery industry safer for patients.

A new report has called cosmetic procedure practices and promotion in the UK a ‘cause for serious concern’.
The Nuffield Council on Bioethics’ report on cosmetic procedures - both surgical and non-surgical - calls for a ban on offering ‘walk in’ cosmetic procedures to young people; a complete overhaul of the regulation of products, such as Botox and dermal fillers, used in cosmetic procedures; and proper regulation of the industry.
