It has been over four years since the health service in Northern Ireland last met its 13 week waiting time target for inpatient and day case treatment and ten years since the 52 week target was met. Currently, over two thirds (70.4%) of patients are waiting more than 13 weeks for inpatient treatment.

Half of surgeons say low morale is the main issue facing surgeons in their workplace at present (51%) according to a member survey conducted for the Royal College of Surgeons by market research company Ipsos MORI.

In a letter to The Sunday Times today, The Royal College of Surgeons and NHS Providers have raised concerns that underfunding in our health services is creating more inefficiency, pointing to surgeons and staff left kicking their heels because of lack of beds and cancelled operations.

HS England data published today for October - December 2016 show that the number of cancelled planned operations has further increased. Figures show 21,249 planned operations were cancelled for non-clinical reasons in October - December 2016. This is a rise of 15.5% in one year even though there has only been a 1% rise in the total number of planned admissions.

NHS England has today launched a public consultation on how it will put in place new standards for hospitals providing congenital heart disease services in England. The consultation aims to gather as many views as possible from patients, families and clinical experts.

NHS England performance data published today for December 2016 shows that the Government’s official waiting time target for planned treatment has been missed again. The percentage of patients treated within 18 weeks has fallen below 90% for first time since March 2011.

StatsWales data published today for December 2016 show that during 2016 waiting times started to improve in the Welsh NHS.
The equivalent of 64,966 patients (14.9%) in Wales waited more than 26 weeks to start treatment despite the Welsh Government’s target of 95% of patients meeting this figure.

Professor Derek Alderson elected as President of the Royal College of Surgeons. Derek Alderson is Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Birmingham. He is currently editor-in-chief of BJS Open. His main area of clinical interest continues to be oesophagogastric surgery.
